How Does the Language Assist Feature Work?
Updated over 3 weeks ago

IMMERSE’s Language Assist tool is designed to help you understand and use new vocabulary, culture and grammar with ease. Whether you're in VR or on your computer, this tool provides real-time translations, pronunciation assistance, and contextual usage tips—all at your fingertips.

Let’s explore how it works, where you can use it, and what to expect from this evolving feature.

What is the Language Assist Feature?

The Language Assist tool is an AI-powered feature accessible through Geo (for VR users and when using it in the practice activities), your friendly virtual assistant. It helps you:

  • Translate most words instantly, with voice input support.

  • Understand and use new vocabulary in conversation.

  • Ask basic language-related questions while participating in live classes, events, and meetups.

Note: The Language Assist feature is still evolving and is currently available everywhere in Immerse except the Homeroom.

Where do I find the tool?

The Language Assist tool can be accessed in two ways:

In VR: Geo Menu

  1. Press the wrist button with your "virtual finger" to bring up Geo, your interactive menu assistant or press the A button on your left controller.

  2. Select the Language Assist button.

  3. Speak or type a word to receive instant translation and pronunciation help.

On Desktop: IMMERSE Menu

  1. Press the Spacebar or tool chest

  2. Select Language Assist from the available options.

  3. Type or use voice input to receive translations and language tips

How does it work?

There are multiple ways to interact with the Language Assist tool, depending on what you need help with:

1. Translate Words Instantly

  • Type or speak a word, and Geo will provide the translation and pronunciation.

  • Clicking on a word in your saved class notes or in a practice activity will make Geo say the word for you! You can then click the translate icon to get more info. Note: the tool cannot be spoken into inside the Homeroom.

2. Get Help with Vocabulary Usage

  • Not sure how to use a word in a sentence? Ask Geo!

  • Example: "How do I use 'recommend' in a sentence?"

  • Geo will provide an example and pronunciation help.

3. Ask Basic Language Questions

  • You can ask Geo simple grammar or language-related questions.

  • Example: "What’s the difference between ‘ser’ and ‘estar’ in Spanish?"

Tip: Use this feature during live classes and events to get quick language help while speaking!

Current Limitations & Future Improvements

While the Language Assist tool is a powerful learning aid, it is still evolving. Here are some current limitations:

  • Contextual Limitations: The AI may produce incorrect translations if there is insufficient context or if words in the target language resemble those in the display language.

  • Speech Recognition Challenges: The system may have difficulty recognizing languages with special characters (such as Polish or Arabic) and will only display answers in the selected display language.

  • My Notes: Currently, adding new words or sentences to My Notes is not possible due to storage and data limitations.

We are actively working to enhance the Language Assist tool, making it more interactive and responsive to user needs!

By integrating the Language Assist tool into your learning routine, you can boost your confidence and improve your language skills in real time. Give it a try and see how Geo can help you on your journey!
