Learning Model
IMMERSE utilizes virtual reality (VR) to offer highly engaging and immersive language-learning experiences. Our lessons and classes are built upon the principles of Communicative Language Teaching (CLT), with a focus on fostering emergent language development. This approach encourages learners to actively experiment with the language through interaction within the VR environment.
Communicative Language Teaching
Communicative Language Teaching
The core of language acquisition at Immerse is the Communicative Language Teaching (CLT) approach, which emphasizes interaction in the target language. The VR environment facilitates authentic communication by placing learners in meaningful, real-world-like scenarios.
Common CLT activities leveraged within IMMERSE include:
Role-plays: Learners practice real-life interactions, such as ordering at a virtual café or checking into a virtual hotel. The realism of the VR setting enhances the authenticity of the task.
Interviews: Practice interviewing skills with peers in realistic virtual spaces like a virtual office or lounge.
Group Work: Dynamic collaboration is fostered as learners navigate a shared virtual space, encouraging interaction and communication while moving around.
Information Gap: Learners work together to bridge a "gap" by gathering information (e.g., exploring a virtual city) and sharing it through language.
Opinion Sharing: The immersive context naturally sparks spontaneous discussions, such as sharing views on virtual art exhibits or cityscapes.
Task-Based Language Teaching
Task-Based Language Teaching
TBLT is a methodology, a subset of Communicative Language Teaching (CLT), that centers on learners completing authentic, meaningful tasks that mirror real-world situations. Within the VR environment of IMMERSE, these challenges are not merely theoretical; they are integrated into dynamic, interactive spaces.
Tasks in TBLT are characterized by four key features:
Pragmatic Meaning is Central: The focus is on practical language use. For example, IMMERSE tasks might require learners to use language to accomplish a functional goal, such as providing directions in a virtual retail space.
A "Gap" Must Exist: Tasks are designed to include an information or knowledge gap that learners must resolve through communication, such as navigating a shared virtual map or finding clues during a collaborative scavenger hunt.
Learner Autonomy in Language Choice: Learners have the freedom to select the most appropriate vocabulary and grammatical structures needed for the task, which reinforces practical application and self-directed language use.
A Clear Non-Linguistic Goal: The task's ultimate measure of success is the completion of a concrete, non-language-based outcome (e.g., solving a mystery or successfully locating specific items), shifting the focus from language as the goal to language as a tool for the task.
Emergent Language Teaching
Emergent Language Teaching
Emergent language is the spontaneous, unpredictable language that learners use to express immediate thoughts or needs. In the VR environment, this often arises as learners interact with and react to virtual stimuli. Guides can leverage these moments to provide valuable, real-time feedback using a variety of techniques:
Feedback Strategy | Description | Example |
Direct Correction (Explicit Reformulation) | Modeling the correct expression for the learner. | "You wouldn't say it like that. You would say, 'X.'" |
Implicit Correction (Recast) | Reformulating the learner's language without interrupting their engagement with a direct correction. | Guide repeats the learner's sentence correctly. |
Clarification/Confirmation | Prompting the learner to reflect on and clarify their own language use. | "What do you mean? Are you saying that...?" |
Metalinguistic | Encouraging the learner to actively think about the underlying language rules. | "What form of the verb do you need here?" |
Self-Correction Prompt (Elicitation) | Asking the learner to generate the correct form themselves. | "How do you say X in English?" |
Vocabulary Expansion (Extension) | Offering alternative expressions to enrich the learner's vocabulary. | "wake up / get up" |
Review/Connection (Recall) | Encouraging learners to remember previously taught vocabulary, which is useful across recurring VR scenarios. | "What was the word we used for that?" |
Class Focus (Sharing) | Highlighting a useful piece of language a learner used and making it a teaching moment for the whole class, often by capturing it in the VR environment. | Guide shares a good phrase used by a learner with the group. |
Learner-Initiated | Encouraging learners to ask questions naturally as they interact with the virtual world. | "Teacher, how do you say X?" |
ℹ️ Applying These Approaches in a Virtual Reality Environment
VR is uniquely suited for applying these pedagogical methods. Guides can use the immersive environments to make lessons more engaging and contextually relevant, leading learners through experiences that exceed the limits of traditional classrooms. Interacting within these settings allows learners to develop linguistic proficiency while also gaining practical language confidence and competence. The unpredictable nature and rich contextual potential of VR offer significant opportunities for Guides to provide real-time support, adjusting to learners' needs as they interact and communicate.
Language Programs & Curriculum
Upon registering with IMMERSE, learners select a language program. They then complete a proficiency placement test to automatically determine the most suitable starting level for their fluency. Although a level is assigned automatically, learners have the flexibility to manually adjust their level whenever needed. For Corporate Learners, Program Admins have the option to control whether their learners are permitted to independently switch between language programs or adjust their levels.
English: Levels 1 - 6 (pre-A1 thru C1)
Spanish: Levels 1 - 5 (pre-A1 thru B2)
French: Levels 1 - 4 (pre-A1 thru B1)
Portuguese: Levels 1 - 4 (pre-A1 thru B1)
