Upon your initial Homeroom login after creating an IMMERSE account, a proficiency placement test will be offered to determine your starting language level. This test will automatically assign your account to the appropriate fluency level. Alternatively, you can opt to bypass the placement test and select your desired level based on the provided descriptions of language abilities at each stage.
⚠️ For some corporate accounts, manual level selection is not permitted due to account settings that mandate completion of a placement test. Please direct any questions to your program administrator.

Structure
Dialogues: Approximately three, 1-minute conversations.
Questions: 5-6 multiple-choice questions in the target language per conversation (3 answer options each).
Intermissions: Geo-guided intermissions are provided to allow for ear-resetting between conversations.
Transcript: No transcript is provided.
Playback: Pause or replay options are not available.
Timing: Unlimited time is given to answer questions.
Grading Process
Grading Process
When you take the IMMERSE Placement Test, your language level is determined by a dynamic system that adapts as you answer questions. It's not about a single score at the end; it's about finding the level that’s the best fit for you.
You'll begin with a conversation and six multiple-choice questions at a B1 level. Based on how many you get right, the test will either send you to a more advanced conversation or a more foundational one.
If you get 2 or more correct, the test will see that you're ready for more. It will give you a new B1 conversation to see how high your proficiency can go.
If you get 0-1 correct, the test will "down-level" you to an A1 conversation to find where your current skills are strongest.
This process of leveling up or down continues with each set of questions. The system analyzes your performance on a series of tasks to find the level that is the best fit for you. For example:
If you get 3 or more correct on the A1 conversation, you'll be moved to a B1 conversation. From there, if you get another 3 or more correct, you'll be placed at Level 3.
If you do really well on your B1 conversations and get 3 or more correct on the advanced set, you'll be moved to a B2 conversation. From there, if you get 4 or more correct, you'll be placed all the way at Level 6! (*Only if English is selected as your learning program)
Limitations
Limitations
It’s important to remember that this test is in a multiple-choice format based on listening comprehension, which means your final score may not perfectly reflect your ability to speak spontaneously in a live class. Some learners feel they are placed at a higher level than their comfort level for speaking, while others feel they could handle a more advanced class.
This is a common limitation of any test that uses a written format to assess speaking ability. The good news is that your placement level is just a suggestion. For live classes, we encourage you to attend the level where you feel most comfortable and confident. Your learning path is all about you, and you can always go down or up a level to find what feels right.

Why is there no speaking or writing evaluation in the Placement Test?
Why is there no speaking or writing evaluation in the Placement Test?
Our current internal placement test, developed by our team of developers and education specialists, effectively assesses certain aspects of proficiency. However, it currently lacks the capability to evaluate speaking and writing skills. This is due to the absence of third-party tool integration that could leverage AI for speech and written analysis, as our team's capacity does not allow for individual learner evaluation. We are actively seeking solutions to enhance this feature, aiming to provide a more precise assessment of your overall fluency.
How is the Placement Test different from the Level Up Assessment?
How is the Placement Test different from the Level Up Assessment?
The Placement Test is your initial assessment, taken when you first sign up. Its primary goal is to establish your starting proficiency level by evaluating your listening comprehension. This test is a crucial part of the onboarding process, ensuring you're placed in the most suitable level for your current abilities.
The Level Up Assessment comes later in your learning journey, designed to confirm your readiness to advance to the next level. You'll be prompted on the Home tab and Learning Path to take this assessment after completing 80% of the lessons in your current level. It can also be taken at any point in your Profile. This test focuses on written comprehension and grammar, requiring you to answer questions related to the language you're learning.
Key Differences:
Timing: The Placement Test is taken at the very beginning, while the Level Up Assessment occurs between levels as you progress.
Focus: The Placement Test emphasizes listening comprehension, whereas the Level Up Assessment evaluates all modalities of the language.
Purpose: The Placement Test determines your initial starting level, while the Level Up Assessment confirms your readiness to advance to the next.
