What are Community Scenes?
Updated today

Community Scenes are unique open locations to practice what you are learning in IMMERSE outside of class, either with AI Avatars or other real members!

Key features:

  • Accessible 24/7- No booking. Simply enter and practice anytime!

  • Private or public - You can explore solo using a private code, share the private code to invite friends, or enter a public scene where anyone can join you.

  • Choose between language specific scenes or join the all-language Commons to mingle internationally!

  • Multiple AI-Avatars to meet in each for open-ended conversation practice

Finding & Joining Community Scenes

  1. Navigate to your Homeroom in IMMERSE.

  2. Select the Community tab from the menu.

Public

Public scenes allow members to meet and mingle with other users on the platform and come in two varieties: language specific or all-languages.

  • Language Specific: Rotating Meetups

    • Every hour a different public scene is showcased, so that members are encouraged to meet up in different locations throughout IMMERSE.

  • All Languages: Language Exchange

    • The Language Exchange All-Languages Common Area brings together members across all languages and levels

Private

  • join a private scene with a code provided by someone else

  • join a private scene by yourself by creating a code

    • share this code with friends so they can join you in the same scene!

⚠️ Important Note:

Although the public rotating community scenes are titled "Meetups" these are NOT STAFFED unless Community Hosts schedule an event to be held in the scene of the hour, which would be announced on our Community Pages or during class on the Community Bulletin. We apologize for this friction with naming conventions and working to create a more digestible design for future updates.

Scenes Available

All community scenes are unique from spaces you will see in lessons and events.

  • Bowling Alley - multiple lanes and located inside of an aquarium; watch the fish swim by as you get a strike

  • Mystery Match - take turns asking yes-or-no questions to guess your opponent's character in this game derived from Guess Who

  • Indoor/Outdoor Bar - this is the place to go for some evening fun under the stars, it's always 5 o'clock here

  • Networking Event - the balcony here looks out over a beautiful seaside city

  • Resort - a tropical island oasis where you can play beach volleyball and hang out around a tiki bar

  • Central Park - a beautiful and spacious autumnal park with colorful leaves, pumpkins, and a tree house

  • Commons - a private version of the Language Exchange commons, with all the same amenities. Great for if you want a private instance with friends to play language games

Engaging with Community Scene AI-Avatars

AI-powered Meta Avatar conversation partners are now available in each Community Scene, offering immersive and interactive language practice. Each avatar has a unique name, appearance, and background, making interactions feel natural and engaging. To help distinguish them from real users, AI avatars have a unique AI tag.

Scene Bulletin

The Scene Bulletin helps users navigate interactions with AI avatars. It is:

  • Located at the entrance spawn point of each Community Scene.

  • A guide on what users can do in the scene.

  • A resource for interaction tips.

  • A directory of all available AI avatars in the scene.

Feature Details

  • AI avatars are only available in public and private Community Scenes (not in the Language Exchange Commons).

  • One user at a time can speak to an AI avatar.

  • Conversations are public—other users in the scene can hear both the user's voice and the avatar’s responses.

  • No speech-to-text feedback—spoken input from the user is not displayed on the screen for a more natural experience.

  • Click on individual words to replay them.

  • Press and hold a full sentence to hear it read aloud again.

  • Use the blue translate icon to open Language Assist.

  • Users can mix the target language with their display language, and the avatar will understand.

  • Conversations are free-flowing and adaptable, not tied to a specific lesson plan.

  • Topics align with the scene’s theme but can evolve based on user input.

    • Example: In a resort scene, avatars may discuss vacations, activities, or the environment.

What AI Avatars Can Do

  • Discuss relatively anything that AI has access to on the internet, but keep in mind content may not always be accurate.

  • Engage in creative storytelling.

  • Remember past interactions, including:

  1. Who the user is.

  2. When they last spoke.

  3. Previous conversation topics.

  • Adapt responses based on user proficiency—simplifying language for beginners and using more complex structures for advanced speakers.

Limitations

Conversation Limits

  • Each interaction allows 10 user responses before a reset is required.

  • When the limit is reached:

    • The Push to Record button greys out.

    • A message appears: "Reached chat max, please reset to continue."

  • To continue, users can ask:

    • "What were we just talking about?"

    • "Where did we leave off?"

  • Messages that violate Community Guidelines still count toward the limit.

Other Limitations

  • No full conversation transcripts available yet.

  • Speech-to-text is not enabled—users will not see their spoken input or how the AI processed it.

  • No feedback or suggestions from Geo during these conversations at this time as this is not meant to be structured practice like with Guided Conversations that are tied to lessons.

Tips for Success

  • Approach avatars confidently—conversations adapt to your level!

  • Try using a mix of your target language and display language to see how the AI responds.

  • Experiment with different conversation starters to explore a wide range of topics.

  • Use the Language Assist feature for real-time translation support.

  • If you run out of responses, restart and ask the avatar to recap where you left off!
